THE BASIC INTERVIEW:

Brian and Jill McLaughlin

B:  What experience do you want someone to have when they walk through your front door?

J: I would hope that they experience a breath of fresh air.  Almost like they have just parted their winter coats in the back of a closet and stepped through into an unexpected place.

B: What are you using the space for?

J: I have high expectations for this space. I want this space set apart from the rest of the home, to set the tone and establish the atmosphere for our family. I see it as the transition space that awakens and realigns whoever enters in or travels through. The sense that I get is that you will feel very present here.

B: How the heck are you going to do that?

J: Good question. I think a large part of trying to accomplish that vision means I need to figure out a way to engage all of the senses - the whole person.  It really needs to be a multi-sensory experience to have any chance at all. I want your eyes to take in the peaceful beauty of the living plants and the comfort of the wood textures, your ears to hear the relaxing sound of the water and for you to smell the yummy healing essential oils, your mind to be refreshed after reading the  8' x 4' quote on the wall.  I want people to feel filled up.

B:  Talk about scale?

J: In this space,  in particular,  I am playing with scale. Between the floor-to-ceiling plant wall that welcomes you, the oversized lighting,  to the 14' wood rainbow that hugs you as you enter - I hope it expands limits.
